interview from the book 100 NewFashionDesigners by Hywel Davies
Describe your design philosophy ?
“Avoid perfection…”
Fragments that don’t entirely match ( maybe by accident) within a calculated and
organized framework make the design more interesting and less predictable.
“Embrace the ugly…”
What is considered as ugly or unfashionable is recycled and introduced in a more
modern design context
“Care about the wearer …”
Creations should give the customer the possibility to take part (through styling and
combining the garments with their own wardrobe) and above all feel comfortable in the creations
How would you define your aesthetic?
Understated, monochrome, user-friendly, unconventional - about proportions
What is the most enjoyable part of design?
The research-phase and the development of a concept throughout the collection
…for example when patterns are being developed and interesting shapes & details are discovered…
How would you describe your creative process ?
Through stretching, scaling and the collage of picture fragments , new shapes
and details can be found
- this technique is then translated into patterns and simulated
on the dressmaking dummy…
Who or what inspires you/informs you?
Everyday life-situations…./ Regular news-reading / Art exhibitions and
all sorts of music …./
Car boot sales & junk markets in Europe / Czech fairy tales / Random web-surfing ….
